Robert L. Nix, Ph.D.
Dr. Nix grew up in New Mexico. He earned his bachelor degree from Wesleyan
University in Middletown, Connecticut, with a major in philosophy and an interdisciplinary honor’s
thesis on environmental economics. After college, he worked with emotionally disturbed children in Massachusetts and California and as a research assistant at the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Nix received his master’s and doctoral degrees from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
While in graduate school, Dr. Nix worked on a research study to understand the effectiveness of
cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat adult depression and prevent relapse, and he conducted parent
groups designed to reduce children’s discipline problems. Dr. Nix completed his clinical internship at
the Center for Children, Youth, and Families, which is part of the psychiatry department of the
University of Vermont medical center. Since 2002, Dr. Nix has been a research faculty member at Pennsylvania State University where he studies how psychological interventions can promote positive
and adaptive functioning and prevent future problems. Dr. Nix has worked with a wide variety of
clients addressing a wide variety of challenges in their lives. He tends to use cognitive and behavioral intervention techniques to help adults improve their mood, the quality of their relationships, and their confidence and competence. He uses similar techniques to help parents understand and improve
children’s behavior. Dr. Nix is a member of the American Psychological Association and is licensed to
practice clinical psychology in the state of Pennsylvania.
