J. Gowen Roper, PhD

Dr. Roper received his A.B. from Princeton University, an M.A. in Developmental
Psychology from San Francisco State University, and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
from the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University in New York, the
first university based professional school in psychology. He completed an internship in Clinical
Psychology at Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center, N.Y.C. Prior to moving to Pennsylvania in
1994, Dr. Roper had been in private practice in New York since 1983, having worked in several
inpatient settings there. He is licensed as a psychologist in Pennsylvania, and he is experienced working
with adolescents, families and adults, both individually and in groups, and has extensive postdoctoral
training in these areas. He is a graduate of the Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and
Psychoanalysis at the Derner Institute at Adelphi University, an intensive four year program of course
work and supervision. He has studied at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy in New York, The Tavistock Clinic and The Institute for Group Analysis, both in London, U.K., where he lived for 1989-
1990. From 1990-1991 Dr. Roper was Visiting Fellow at The University of Melbourne, Melbourne,
Australia, where he worked at the University Counseling Service, treating students and staff in short-
term psychotherapy. Dr. Roper maintains a private practice at the Child, Adult, & Family Psychological Center, and he is currently Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology and Assistant Director of the
Psychology Clinic at The Penn State University. He is a member of the American Psychological
Association, a Fellow of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and a member and past president
of the Central Pennsylvania Psychological Association.
