Hawaii: The Big Island

Day 4 | 9.8 mile hike | 4/28/01

Volcanoe House - Volcanoes National Park - 4,042 ft
The day is yours to explore this fascinating park, home of Pele, the goddess of fire. On our optional hike, we're joined by Janet Babb, our local friend and volcanologist. At Kilauea Caldera and Kilauea Iki Crater, you can hike across a thick crust of lava that oozed from Pu'u Puai in 1959. Or you may want to investigate the Thurston lava Tube, a natural tunnel thick with delicate ferns and soft mosses. Other options involve visiting the Vocano Art Center to see the work of local artists. For an unforgettable adventure, take a van ride to view active lava flows into the Pacific.
